She catches his eye across the cafe,
He packs up his guitar and starts away…
She watches him go; another chance lost,
Her head is full of all the things she didn’t say…
…and how she keeps on comin’ back to hear him play…
Could I buy you a coffee?
How about a movie?
If you’ve got nothin’ goin’ on
We could dance until the dawn…
So if you’ve got the time
Could I buy you a coffee?
He finds her lookin’; pretends he can’t see,
He picks up his guitar and starts to play…
He knows she’s watchin’; he feels his heart race,
Forgets the words to all the songs he always plays…
…and he keeps comin’ back here just to see her face…
Could I buy you a coffee?
How about a movie?
If you’ve got nothing going on
We could dance until the dawn…
So if you’ve got the time
Could I buy you a coffee?
Oh…the months go by…
She finds somewhere else to spend her time…
And he’s got a new gig down on 2nd Avenue…
The tips are slow in comin’, but the faces all are new…
…and so the world keeps turnin’, like it used to do…
A Friday ev’nin’ in a down town bar,
He sees her walk right in and it stops his heart…
Just like she used to, she watches him play,
She drops a couple bucks inside his guitar case…
…and once again he watches as she walks away…
Oh but later on that ev’nin’,
As he’s counting once again…
He finds a paper napkin between a single and a ten…
…and slowly he unfolds a scribbled note that says…
Could I buy you a coffee?
Or how about a movie?
If you’ve got nothin’ goin’ on
We could dance until the dawn…
If you’ve got the time
We could meet for a glass of wine,
Or if you’re so inclined…
Could I buy you a coffee?
